Evaluating Your Brand

Whether you have been in business for years or are just starting out, it is important to evaluate your brand. What I mean by evaluating your brand is that you must take time CHANGE-ALMOST-NEVERto evaluate not only the message your brand sends, but how you are using that message and whether it is working. Why is this important? I think the obvious answer is that we cannot just put some things on autopilot and expect them to be effective forever. Our world is constantly changing and businesses have to evolve with the changing times. Does this mean we change the look and feel of our business through our logo and marketing? Absolutely not. It means we strive to remain relevant so as not to lose the opportunity to do business with our potential market.

Let’s talk about the elements of a brand.

Your logo is the face of your business. What message does it send? Maybe it says, “I’m old and irrelevant,” because it has been 20 years since any designer has touched it. It is important to take a look at your logo with fresh eyes to make sure that it is still sending the message you want it to send. Take a look at the changes Wendy’s made to its logo in 2012.  Did they change the whole look of it? No, that would have been the wrong thing to do. But the update gives it a fresh look that keeps it relevant to today’s market.

If you are just starting out and are having a logo designed for your business, make sure you see samples of your designers’ work (preferably before you hire them) so that you know what they can do. Make sure that your designers understand something about what your business does and how you operate so they can create for you a logo that is relevant and meets the needs of your business. Simple is better. Less is more.

Marketing Your Brand

While evaluating your logo, take time to evaluate your marketing: how you are using that brand. While most of us do not have a budget like Apple or Nike, we can still get the word out about our businesses effectively. There are a number of ways to use your brand that must be evaluated constantly in order to be effective: the company Website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, email, direct mail, business cards, brochures, etc. The list goes on and on. Evaluate what has worked for your business in the past and what has not. Make sure that each piece is consistent with your logo and colors (2-3 colors maximum). The more recognizable your marketing from piece to piece, the better. If something is not working, or you cannot track it, stop doing it and find another avenue.

    Brand awareness is such an important aspect of for any business however no more so within the removers industry. We are in one of the most competitive markets around and differentiating your brand is essential. Nice article!
