6 Helpful Tips for Beautiful Family Portraits

6 Helpful Tips for Beautiful Family Portraits

By Lily M. Villanueva of Dynamo Creative

As the long, hot days of summer are winding down, fall is beckoning and kids are back in school, which means Picture Day is just around the corner. For parents, this means finding the perfect outfit and making sure every strand of hair is just right so as to avoid the dreaded “Alfalfa” cowlick (remember The Little Rascals?).

Fall is also a great time for outdoor family portraits. The weather is cooler, the leaves are changing—even in sunny Southern California—and it’s an excellent opportunity to capture how much your kids have changed and grown. An outdoor photo session also allows your family to interact and have fun during the shoot (as opposed to sitting and posing in a chilly photo studio), which can lend itself to beautiful images that reflect the essence of your unique family.

Here are a few helpful tips to review before you schedule your family portraits:

Find a portrait photographer you love. Every photographer has their own style and personality. Choose one who makes you feel comfortable and whose work you admire. Ask friends and family for recommendations or search for local portrait photographers with online portfolios that you can peruse. What did we do before the mighty Internet?

• Schedule your photo session during the “golden hour.” This is the time just before sunset when the light outdoors casts a golden glow, which makes for gorgeous photos. Early morning light is also pretty, but if you’re not a morning person (or your photographer is not a morning person!), early evening will work better.

• Choose clothing that is flattering and comfortable to wear. If you feel fabulous, your photos will reflect that! (The opposite is true, too.) Pick clothes that move with you and that are not too tight or too loose. Layering your outfits with simple accessories—a cute hat, a fuzzy scarf, or a chunky necklace—will add a “pop” to your photos.

• Wear complementary or analogous colors. Color is your friend! (By the way, this doesn’t mean wearing the same

color either.) Choose a hue that looks great on you and your family. Then, pick two more complementary colors (think of the colors across from each other on a color wheel). Wearing outfits with analogous colors (colors that are side by side on a color wheel) also adds visual interest. For examples of complementary and analogous colors, check out colormatters.com.

•  Bring snacks and some favorite toys for the little ones. If the photo session is running long, a light snack can go a long way. Full tummies make for happy babies and happy toddlers! Toys can also help distract a fussy baby and can double as cute props. Hint: If your baby or toddler still naps, try to make sure they get a little siesta before the shoot.

• Have fun! Smile, laugh, and enjoy spending this time together. Your family portraits will be treasured keepsakes that you’ll be able to share with your loved ones for many years to come.
