If you’re planning to move in 2015, then here are five tips to help you start the process as soon as possible.

  1. Choose a real estate agent

Choosing a real estate agent in advance will give you more time to select the best place among what’s available. Having more time will mean that you can choose the option that will suit you the best without having to stress about finding something before the move out date, and without having to settle on somewhere that you’re not happy with.

Contracts, negotiations, and repairs can take months, so getting a real estate agent sooner rather than later can help – this can be the difference between being excited for your move, or stressed that you couldn’t get the kind of place that you wanted.

  1. Make a budget

The cost of relocating will include more than just the moving truck. It’s also important to consider the cost of packaging materials before your move, including special boxes for fragile items, tape, paper, plastic wrap, and padded blankets to protect furniture, among other things. If you’re planning to move any valuables, or simply a large amount of items, then moving insurance may also be a good investment.

Although your move-out and move-in days will normally be the same, in the event that they are different you will also need to budget for storage and possibly hotel fees.

In addition, if you’ll need help moving, remember to also add in the cost of hiring workers to assist you with the process.

  1. Consider professional movers

Most people do not have a network of skilled helpers at their disposal for moving day, but professional moving companies do. You may also find that hiring workers to help on your moving day is not as expensive as you might have thought.

Consider the time that you could save by hiring someone else to help you move your items from your old place to your new place, and decide whether or not the price of hiring movers is worth your own time on the moving day.

If you have any special, heavy objects (such as a piano), then you’ll need special assistance to move these too. Make arrangements to hire movers well in advance, so you can focus more on the moving process and less on the manual labor and sweat that it will require.

  1. Plan  yard sale for unwanted items

Moving is the perfect opportunity to have a clean, uncluttered, and organized place to live. Nobody wants their new place to be cluttered with old items they didn’t need. Packing less will save you money, as well as your time on moving day. You can begin packing less-used, but necessary, items well in advance, in order to save time packing them on moving day.

Yard sales can be a great way to get rid of unneeded items, but know that planning and holding a yard sale will take extra time and should be done well in advance before the moving day. Recycle, or dispose of everything else that you don’t need and are unable to sell.

As moving day approaches, check your refrigerator for items that might not survive the move, and either consume or dispose of them. While it might be safe to bring refrigerated items if moving within the same city, it wouldn’t be a good idea to carry a gallon of milk in the trunk of your car if you’re moving out of state.

  1. Repair and clean

Give yourself plenty of time to do repairs and cleaning at your current place before moving out, as well as at your new place before moving in.

Areas that need more serious cleaning and repairs, such as replacing carpet, can cost more time, and may take weeks between scheduling workers, ordering supplies, and getting the job done. Keep a list of all repairs that need to be done before moving out, and take care of them as soon as possible. Moving will take a large amount of your time already, and you’ll save yourself and others stress by taking care of cleaning and repairs in advance.

To summarize, if you’re planning to move in 2015, time is of the essence. The sooner that you can begin the process, the more time that you’ll have to get your ideal place, and the less stress you will deal with as the date approaches. Prepare early for your move, and you’ll enjoy a more comfortable move in 2015.
