My March Against Breast Cancer

Cancer Sucks

This past month I participated in a major charitable event. To be part of something so big had quite an impact on me. In the past on different occasions I, along with the rest of the Camelot family, have helped in varying degrees on a much smaller scale. For instance, we helped out in the aftermath of Katrina, and, of course, that felt good. This time, however, it was a bit different.

Last December our family received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Thanks to years of research, our family member received cutting-edge treatment to deal with the situation. Hopefully we are on the mend. Time will tell.

As family members of the affected, we all wanted to be able to wield a magic scalpel and guarantee a successful surgery, or go into the kitchen and whip up a special concoction that will make everything go away. Accustomed to being capable of helping anyone with anything, from a jump start to a push start to giving someone a lift or running an errand, it was and is extremely frustrating to the point of upsetting to feel incapable of personally doing anything to resolve the situation.

One of us came up with the idea of giving back for the benefits received from the technological advances that have come about over the years in a unique way. We pledged to raise $9,000 and participate in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer of one and a half marathons, 39.3 miles to be exact. How the Avon foundation uses the funds raised

The money raised goes to fund further research toward a cure and to provide free or low cost mammogram screenings for early detection for uninsured women. The Avon Walk serves the purposes of bringing awareness to the need for early detection and further fund-raising. So this past September several

family members joined forces with thousands of other people. Together we raised millions of dollars and walked many miles for the cause. It worked. We are many miles and millions of dollars closer to whipping up that special concoction.
