Moving Between Houses: Preparation Guide for a Local Move

Are you getting ready to move to a new house in your local area? If so, congratulations! Relocating is always an exciting time—even if your move isn't taking you far away. Local moves are generally much less complicated and take less time, but it's still important to stay organized and make plans for the day when you'll move to a new house.

Here are 10 tips to help you prepare for a move!

  1. Downsize first!

Before moving out of your house, go through your belongings and get rid of infrequently used items. Donate these items to a local charity, have a yard sale, or sell them online.

  2. Create a budget for your moving expenses.
Will you need full-service movers, help with packing, or storage services? Be sure to research and request price quotes.

  3. Hire movers.

Experienced professional movers who offer local moving services can be a great help and make your move to a new house less stressful. If you're moving during the first or at the end of the month, be sure to schedule early as these are high-demand times.

  4. Get your moving supplies.

Prepare for a move with plenty of sturdy boxes, packing tape, and fillers such as packing paper or bubble wrap for fragile items.

  5. Make arrangements for child care or pet care.

Ensure the safety of children and pets. Hire a sitter to keep them out of the house and away from the moving activity.

  6. Need parking permits?

If you're moving in a busy urban area or large condominium or apartment complex, you may need a parking permit for the moving truck. Be sure to request that in advance.

  7. Schedule utility shut-off.

Before moving from your house, notify your utility and homeowners or renters insurance providers of the date you'll be leaving.

  8. Submit your change of address.

Be sure to let the US Postal Service know when they should stop delivery at your old address.

  9. Ensure your new home is ready for you.

Make sure you have the keys and any access codes, that the utilities are on, and that the prior owners or tenants have cleaned out the house.

  10. Do a final inspection.

Once your movers have finished loading, take a final walkthrough to ensure nothing has been left behind.

Even if your move is a local one, it can still create a great deal of stress and worry. Fortunately, with a little planning and advance preparation, the big day can go smoothly, and in no time, you’ll be relaxing in your new home!
