That Box Looks Familiar—Did We Move It Once or Twice Already?!

Or at least, it is just around the corner. In Washington, D.C., spring will announce its arrival with blooming cherry blossoms while in Austin, Texas, it will do so with bluebonnets. Here in SoCal, our rainy winter is supposed to bring a remarkable superbloom of California poppies and other wildflowers to the high deserts. Whether you make it out to the desert for a view, all of us Angelenos look forward to enjoying the local refreshing, sunny spring weather; green hillsides; freeway daisies; and lupines filling every open space before the mind-melting LA summer heat arrives.

So why, with all the outdoor beauty that spring offers, would anyone opt to stay indoors for spring cleaning?! Seems counterintuitive to me, but nonetheless, there are some strong arguments in favor of cleaning out the closet. The mental benefits of spring cleaning have been established:

Spring cleaning brings a sense of control and accomplishment. It is a task that brings visible, tangible results to your home that you will enjoy every day. Waking up and returning to an uncluttered home brings some peace of mind, especially when one is facing issues they can’t control. A spring-cleaned home also contributes to focus, especially for those who work from home. There are physical benefits too! An uncluttered home has fewer tripping hazards, and spring cleaning requires a healthy amount of movement, which may springboard you into keeping a daily routine of healthy movement!

And lastly, from the unique perspective of a mover, there are financial benefits too. The best way to lower your moving bill is to move fewer things. So many of my clients end up paying for things to be transported to their new home that they don’t want anymore. In fact, occasionally, we have moved the same unopened box to more than one home for a client! Often, by the time you know you need to move, there is not enough time left to do a thorough decluttering. So now is the time to get started.

With all these benefits, no wonder there is a wide-reaching heritage of spring cleaning that spans many cultures and faiths! From Jewish and Christian Orthodox faiths to the Chinese, Scottish, and Iranian people, there is a strong historical and spiritual tradition of cleaning out the home in springtime, including that of the frontiersmen and women of the early U.S.

Pick a room or a theme—such as electronics or clothes—and start decluttering! You’ll enjoy those springtime hikes and summer beach days more knowing you have an airy, decluttered home to welcome you back!
